Chavez earns Decision to keep Brown winless in UFC
TJ Brown slides to 0-2 in UFC with Danny Chavez winning via Uniamious Decision (29-28) in his UFC debut
TJ Brown (14-7) has been ready to avenge his UFC debut loss to Jordan Griffith via Round 2 submission, but still met adversity when on the scales at official weigh ins. Brown missed his Featherweight target after his second attempt by a close .5lbs. Despite the miss the fight goes on and his even more complicated path to redemption leads through Danny Chavez (10-3). Chavez is making his own UFC debut fresh off a Round 1 KO over Dylan Cala at Global Legion FC 14.
Chavez is all composure and focus to start the first round. He fired off powerful leg kicks and spinning head kicks before Brown tested the distance and walked his combos inside. Both fighters learned alot about each other early, but where not discouraged.
Brown has explosive power and showed a willingness to eat equally powerful shots on his way into the clinch. Brown is forced to rely on his toughness to weather the storm and find openings for his shots. It is the speed of Chavez that keeps him safe and controlling the round from a distance, but late in the first round Brown finally starts to feel out Chavez and improve the timing of his counters.
The encouragement Brown is feeling becomes evident in his feinting to start the second round. It is again the speed, power and accuracy of Chavez that cuts through the confidence and delivers an echoing crack.
Just as Brown finally established some rhythm and was timing his shots well, that power right came screaming down from Chavez and dropped Brown into the mat.
Brown bullied his way to his feet with his back to the cage. Chavez continued to find his target with efficiency, even on the back step as he anticipates Brown’s frustrated counter strikes.
In the third and final round Chavez remained composed and powerful. He picked his shots with care and and never over committed. Brown became more frantic, yet creative with his striking.
His urgent energy and persistence began to bait Chavez into brawling at moments. Brown stepped his pace up in desperation and Chavez looked to coast his way through the last half of the final round.
