Controversial DWCS winner Loughnane making PFL debut
Although he didn’t earn a UFC contract with his Contender Series win, Brendan Loughnane (17-3) still emerged into the spotlight after Dana White’s controversial comments on his performance. The show is of course looking for finishers and when Loughnane shot for a takedown attempt with seconds left in the bout Dana White soured on the prospect and declined to offer a contract.
The decision was controversial among fans and pundits alike and the discussion propelled Loughnane into the mma news cycle. White himself was the first to admit that the controversy was building Loughnane’s brand and it proved to be true as it earned him a shot with PFL. He looked solid in his decision win over Bill Algeo and is now riding the momentum of his three fight win streak into his PFL debut against Matt Wagy (13-6).
Wagy is coming off a brutal liver shot loss in an interim title bout for the Titan FC Bantamweight championship against Irwin Rivera. Wagy has fought in many promotions including Gladiator Challenge, Titan FC and was the main event vs Kester Mark for Bellator MMA Series: Miami. Wagy has 8 finishes in his 13 wins and only one of his losses wasn’t a finish, so his match up with Loughnane is sure to deliver.
On Oct 11 Loughnane vs Wagy kick off the prelims on ESPN+ at 5pm PT. Main card action takes place on ESPN 2 at 7pm PT. Kayla Harrison vs Genah Fabian headlines the PFL Playoffs with Sarah Kaufman vs Larissa Pacheco as the co-main event at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV.
