Jacare makes the move up to 205lbs vs Jan Blachowicz

Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza is moving up in weight and will make his Light Heavyweight debut in Sao Paolo, Brasil on November 16 against contender Jan Blachowicz.

Jacare has ended his run at 185lbs after being unable to book a rematch with Kelvin Gastelum. Souza hasn’t enjoyed back to back wins since 2017 when he had victories over Vitor Belfort and Tim Boetsch. Since then he has alternated wins and losses. After finishing Derek Brunson in the first round he followed up with a decision loss to Gastelum. He bounces back with a third round finish over Chris Weidman only to lose a decision to Jack Hermansson.

Opportunities were drying up at 185lbs for Souza and whatever advantages the weight cut may have afforded him weren’t enough to justify waiting for his turn again at a number one contender’s spot. The perception of Light Heavyweight is that it is generally thin and whatever talent occupies the Top 15 rankings is largely prospective or unjustified in a title shot against Jon Jones just yet. The time is ripe for change and there is more opportunity at 205lbs.

There seems to be a clear path to title contention in his more natural weight class with his veteran stature and name being worthy of facing off with Jones. All Jacare must do is finally string together a couple wins. Even back to back wins at Light Heavyweight could conceivably be enough to ‘rush’ a veteran into a title shot and allow breathing room for the younger parts of the division to further develop.

The next closest contender was likely thought to be Blachowicz, but with his booking against Jacare it remains to be seen who Jones will face next. Blachowicz will surely have done enough to earn his title shot with a win over Souza, but it remains to be seen if a Souza’s campaign at 205lbs can survive an opening loss.
