Jon Jones ponders MSG debut?
Jon Jones next fight likely in Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas.
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones initially hinted that his next fight would be on December 14 in Las Vegas, but it would now seem that he has set his sights on the iconic Madison Square Garden on November 2. Fighting at MSG was never an option for the majority of Jones’ storied career so he is now looking to write his own chapter into the venue’s history books.
While there are many young and exciting prospects at 205lbs, as far as actual contenders are concerned there isn’t much left for Jones to choose from. And the options are only getting thinner as the UFC officially announced Dominic Reyes vs Chris Weidman as Main Event for Fight Night Boston on October 18. While the undefeated Reyes (11-0, 5-0 in UFC) has expressed his desire for booking a fight with Jones, it seems the strategy here is to have his true coming out party with a victory over Weidman. A win over a veteran name in Weidman would surely provide a significant enough push to clutch a title shot, especially if it comes with a statement finish over ‘The All American’.
With Reyes booked it looks like Jones could likely find a dance partner in Corey Anderson (#3) or Jan Blachowicz (#5). Any booking at MSG will likely come after the result of the Cormier vs Stipe rematch in Anaheim on August 17, as a potential jump in weight class still looms over Jones’ next booking. And if he does have eyes for a second belt, what better place to do it then where all the Champ Champ hype began?
